ENTREPRENEURS are the real saviours of the JAMAICAN Economy

As a citizen of the small town of May Pen, I have been able to witness the direct impact that entrepreneurship can have on a rural area. Over the years I have witnessed our small town evolve from having one (1) Juici Patties restaurant to three (3), one (1) shopping tower to several shopping plazas, one (1) super plus to several large food chains etc. But who are the people responsible for such massive improvements, is it our government? or is it the creative and innovative minds that we have been blessed with and that happens to reside in our area?

Whilst we might argue that our Chinese associates have been taking over our land, let's not forget their positive contribution towards the growth and development of our economy. From the early 70s, they have been teaching us the significant impact that entrepreneurship can have towards uplifting the lives and laying a positive future for generations. But did we seek to grasp the idea or the notion that our country is vastly equipped with all the right resources to steadily grow our GNP & GDP rates to provide stability and self-dependence? Jamaica is blessed with resources such as sugar, salt, limestone, bauxite, agriculture, mining & of course our beauty which contributes so much to tourism; yet still, we suffer from the burden of inflation when all that we need are right here on our lands. Sadly, poor management by our government over the years has led to us selling out the majority to owners overseas. Thus leaving an even heavier financial burden on our public sector, which is evident again with the reforming of our tax packages? Mark my words; nothing is wrong with giving back to the people, but when it is always stemmed around our taxes, there must be a problem. When we are always so quick to borrow to build infrastructures that will not have immediate impacts or long-term funds, but never to implement measures aimed at improving our corrupted and obsolete crime system or to even to improve our sugar plants, there must be a problem.

So this raises the question; who are the people responsible for keeping our economy alive to this? Who are the people responsible for providing employment to the ones who weren't lucky enough to work within our public sector or blessed with the opportunity to be self-employed?

The Michael Lee Chins, Juki Chin, Butch Stewart, Peter Bunting, Bryon Stewarts, Trevor Dunkley, Yaneek Page, even the controversial Adidja Palmer. These are the people who have been doing their very best to ensure that our economy is not fully tarnished or pushed aside entirely. If we look within the scope of employment, infrastructural development, foreign exchange and GNP we have seen over the years how dependent our country is on the operation of businesses owned by these individuals. Furthermore, if we look towards the sectors of our land it makes us envision the significant growth that would be manifested if more was implemented within this field. Therefore why don’t we place far more emphasis on entrepreneurship within our Primary & Secondary Schools to not only teach it as a subject or course but to also to explain and show its impact towards our economy.

It is rather essential for our Government to place more emphasis within this field in order to rebuild our country back to the economy we had in the early 60s. More so by implementing more subsidy beneficiaries to help our future entrepreneurs to craft their skills into factories, talent into skills or small businesses into franchises. These factors will ensure that our country is poised towards getting back our economy to where it needs to be. Entrepreneurs are naturally blessed with the ingenuity to solve problems. This is what they do on a daily basis at through their businesses. Just imagine what we can do as a country if our Government should join forces with them before they make financial decisions.
